In the poor districts of Rio de Janeiro, the drug mafia rules, and they start early in their recruitment. But recently, the drug bosses have gotten competition.
The organization "Viva Rio" gets young people off the streets through its sports program, gives drop-outs a second chance, and also helps them to find a job. If neighbors fight over crops, they do not need to involve the mafia anymore. Instead, the new "Office for Conflict Resolution" will do the job. There is even an internet newspaper: "Vivafavela“, which also reports from Cantagalo, when there are no shootings. Scientists, businessmen, journalists and social workers founded "Viva Rio" – a network which can reach every inhabitant of Rios - from the mayor all the way to the drug dealers.
“A third of confiscated weapons were originally bought legally and then sold on the black market. Most of them are made in Brazil. If we stop them at the source, fewer weapons will get into the hands of the drug dealers.” Antonio Bandeiras
